More than 150 students from schools across the Kimberley gathered in Broome recently to participate in the largest school sporting event in the region.

Over two days, First Nations young people from across the nation are taking part in Deadly Democracy, a First Nations youth program that builds participant’s skills and networks and encourages them to lead change in their communities.

More than 70 Aboriginal women from communities across the Kimberley met in Broome recently to network and share knowledge to strengthen capacity for women’s sport.

Our Women in Sport Coordinator has arrived back in Broome from a big trip throughout the East Kimberley, touching base with communities during pre-season. Katherine travelled to Yiyili, Halls Creek, Kalumburu, Wyndham and Kununurra, and then on to Looma the following week.

Helen Ockerby and Amanda Gregory from our Broome office attended the Woombooriny Amboon Angarriiya Partnership Initiative #IWD2021 Women's Forum, organised by Community Navigators for women and communities along the Dampier Peninsula.

Our Pilbara duo Kachina and Roedol have started the term with a community engagement program at the Yandeyarra pool.

Welcome to the team Darliah! Darliah Killer started her new role officially today as our new Looma Recreation Officer Darliah is a deadly sporting role model for the community, and did very well with her first Aussie Hoops 'Come & Try' session.

In the West Kimberley, our team are running weekly overnight visits through Djarindjin, One Arm Point and Beagle Bay as well as down to Bidyadanga every fortnight

Last week we kicked off on our first term program along the peninsula with volleyball, cricket, soccer AND basketball!

Meet Darrilyn Gordon, our new Halls Creek Senior Development Officer.

Growing up with Garnduwa programs around Halls Creek, Darrilyn always played sport and relied on it to focus and keep her head above water.

There is much to celebrate amongst our team in the Broome office this month, as Eloise, Helen and Amanda all receive various awards for their determination and commitment in their relevant fields.

From Tuesday – Friday, the Garnduwa Youth Hub runs activities at the Drop in centre for kids in the community. This term we have been alternating with swimming sessions at the pool, pizza making afternoons, sushi making! (and eating), as well as casual basketball down at the courts.

From the 1st - 5th of February, Garnduwa held our tri-annual all staff workshop at Goolarri Media in Broome. Although a few of our staff were impacted by the Perth lockdown and floods across the East Kimberley, we were still able to welcome aboard new staff and link our team in through Zoom.

Meet our new East Kimberley Area Manager, Riley Dolman! Riley will be based in Kununurra, overseeing Garnduwa events and activities across the East Kimberley region.

FairGame Australia are a nationwide organisation helping to recycle sporting equipment and provide support with sport across regional and remote Australia.

The swimming pool in Fitzroy Crossing is the centre of activity over the wet season for kids in the Valley. Garnduwa and Royal Life Saving WA team up to make sure kids in our regions are learning how to swim and play safely in the pool.

Fantastic turn out to the Junior King of the Kimberley Carnival in Halls Creek over the last week of school holidays.

Our Fitzroy Valley Youth Hub has been running daily activities for young people in town these school holidays. Partnering with Royal Life Saving WA at the local pool, Garnduwa ran three afternoon pool activities last week with the giant inflatable obstacle course! It’s a great way to keep kids in the community active and cool during the hot season.

Over the school holidays, The Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries supported our team in Halls Creek by sending up some crew from the Bickely Outdoor Recreation Camp just outside of Perth. For a few weeks over the holidays, Cameron, Tyrell & Sandy from Bickley ran water games and kayaking lessons in the Halls Creek swimming pool.

Last week Garnduwa hosted Dr Tracy Westerman alongside our partners in Broome for a two day workshop coinciding with our annual end of year staff development week.
