Meet Darrilyn Gordon
Meet Darrilyn Gordon, our new Halls Creek Senior Development Officer.
Growing up with Garnduwa programs around Halls Creek, Darrilyn always played sport and relied on it to focus and keep her head above water.
“I had the opportunity to move to Perth when I was younger to pursue a career with basketball. In my head I knew it was a good idea but in my heart I could only feel the bigger picture. It’s my responsibility to help break the cycle, and my priorities now lie with the next generation.
As well as being deadly at sports, Darrilyn was crowned Kimberley Girl in 2015 and AgriFuture Australia Rural Woman of the Year Award in 2018. Having just moved on from her career with WAPOL, Darrilyn is keen to engage with the local community as she “loves that sport is community driven and community controlled”.
“Sport and recreation is where it all started for me. Participating in Garnduwa women’s leadership camps and sport programs right through from athletics to basketball were my first step in my leadership journey.”
“there was always something to do with Garnduwa, always a way to get involved. Even when I finished school, I still participated in local carnivals. There were always opportunities to volunteer and step up, whether that was by coaching, refereeing, or administration. My drive to be a leader in my community really started with sport and recreation.
Being a mum to a 12 year old, Darrilyn knows what drives kids in town, and has a passion for creating more opportunities for our young ones. Darrilyn sees sport as the catalyst for breaking down barriers in Halls Creek and providing real opportunities for kids to thrive and achieve.
As our Development Officer, Darriyln will be running after school activities for young people in town, collaborating a few days a week with Wunan and other local organisations to run holistic and targeted programs.
