Garnduwa welcomes Michael: The Fitzroy Valley’s new active communities coordinator

We sat down with Michael to learn about the journey that led him to the Kimberley, and what his aspirations are for the regions sport and recreation programming.

Where is home for you?

I am originally from Australia. My cultural background is South American. I am half Chilean and half El Salvadorian. I am fluent in both Spanish and English.

Tell us about your sport and recreation history?

I grew up playing all types of sports from a young age, including AFL, Soccer, Cricket, Basketball, Taekwondo, Athletics, and Swimming.

I am incredibly passionate and competitive about my sport. I enjoy recreational activities such as focusing on my physical health & wellbeing through exercising and playing mixed sports.

And what about in the professional space?

My key attributes are critical thinking, organisation and budgeting.

I started in a Customer Service position working for multiple large organisations.

Over the years, I have built an extensive professional background in Accounting & Bookkeeping. I've taken the initiative to apply the skills I've gained to my everyday life.

Today, I can successfully manage my finances, independence, and life in a position where I've rediscovered my passion for sports.

I am proud to work for an organisation that allows me to share my experience with others and to teach what I've learned to love growing up.

What has motivated you to join Garnduwa and lead the the Fitzroy Valley’s sport and recreation programming?

I have chosen to join Garnduwa because of the exciting opportunity to apply a service in following my passion within sports and to be able to relocate to a beautiful part of Australia where I can travel exploring the region and at the same time be a part of making a difference in supporting local Aboriginal communities.

Growing up, playing sports has helped me to live a happy, healthy, active, and fulfilling lifestyle, which I would like to share and pass on to others.

What are you looking forward to and what do you hope to achieve in your work with Garnduwa?

In joining the Garnduwa team, I look forward to meeting the communities, surrounding myself with like-minded people, and being a positive influence. I am excited to get out on the field, engage with people, and share a fun experience.

I want to make a difference in someone else's life, help others see life in a different light, support a healthier lifestyle, gain connections, and continue to grow my personal and professional development.
