kimberley active communites

Building the capacity of Kimberley communities to implement and deliver sustainable and self-sufficient sport and recreation programs.

why sport and recreation?

Evidence overwhelmingly supports the link between physical activity and sports participation and a range of benefits for Aboriginal individuals and communities. Participation in sporting programs promotes improved social and emotional well-being, improves resilience, enhances cognitive development, and fosters social, cultural, and community connectedness. Evidence further supports the link between sports participation and improved literacy, numeracy and positive educational outcomes.

For many communities in the Kimberley, sports participation is extremely important. One of the key challenges faced by remote communities in achieving that participation is the lack of opportunities to engage in activities. This is where our program fills a critical gap. We ignite activity and provide the support and resources necessary for communities to independently coordinate and deliver their programs and events.

About the program

Communities participating in the Kimberley Active Communities (KAC) project are engaged in the co-design of a unique and strategic Sport and Recreation Plan. The plan identifies key community stakeholders and develops a timeline of regular programming and events. In consultation with community members, the plan also highlights and articulates immediate needs and aspirations in the context of sport and recreation within that community. Our team then provides core sports program delivery on a weekly basis, typically AFL, basketball, athletics, and soccer, and assists with community-led events.
